You may wonder why star figures are so popular these days. Although this figure seems to be a pretty old design, star designs especially nautical star tattoos are one of the most requested custom designs. From simple image in the past, artists used to include several things that make the original design more innovative and unique. As you can see, there’s an endless options to choose from. Whether you’re a man or a woman, these designs will surely fit to your taste.

Traditionally, tattoos involved old school designs including dragons, crosses and tribal. Stars are not yet included in the so-called “traditionalists” when it comes to tattoos. They’re against with star designs specifically nautical star tattoos because of its popularity. Instead, they choose old designs to be more unique. Most people in the past used to get tribal designs like barbed wire and bracelet-type designs for examples.

From generation to generation, the way people choose tattoo designs has been changed. And because of the huge influence they get from media-based programs such as televisions and internet, they have more ideas in their mind. Instead of choosing old school designs, they choose what is cool and popular. Instead of visiting tattoo parlors, they’ve rather look what’s “in” to celebrities and get ideas from it. In some cases, they used to ask their friends to get enticing ideas for tattoos.

Let’s go back to the first question. What are the things that make nautical star tattoos so popular? In fact, this design is old and not that innovative. There are actually six things that boost its popularity as mentioned below.

1. These designs are very gender neutral compare to other types of tattoos. Meaning, stars are suitable for both men and women. Usually star tattoos were seen on wrists in commemoration with what sailors believed. In the older days, sailors inked stars tattoos on their wrists as protection.

2. Stars are suitable for beginners who don’t want to feel much pain. Stars are small in sizes and can be easily covered when going to parties and formal places.

3. Stars are small and can be easily covered when going to formal places.

4. Stars are pretty universal symbols of good things such as inspiration, strength, guidance and happiness.

5. Stars can be used to cover bad tattoo

6. Stars are celestial type of tattoos that even young women can have. These are popular themes and highly increasing in the market today.

Let’s face it. We’re now living in the modern age. Gone are the days wherein we have to spend a lot of time in choosing tattoos. Let’s go on to what is popular. But above all your decision is very important when choosing tattoos. These images are not meant for a short period of time. In fact, tattoos are lifetime commitments. With star designs specifically nautical star tattoos, you can express your message to the world.

Nautical star tattoos have caused much controversy and heated discussion regarding the true meaning of the design. Over the years, many groups have attempted to tag the design with their own unique interpretation. In addition to the nautical connection, this popular tattoo design has been connected to the military, punk rockers, the lesbian community and the anti-racism movement in recent years.

But what are the origins of the nautical star tattoo? Where did it come from and what did it originally represent?

Almost everybody, without exception, accepts that sailors were the first group of people to wear nautical star tattoos.

In previous centuries, working at sea was a very dangerous and unpredicatable way of life. Sailors had very little to guide them at night, apart from the stars. And the one that they relied upon most was Polaris, or the North Star. As this star is positioned close to the north pole, it appears to be stationary at all times, unlike other stars which appear to move as time passes. This provided early sailors with a fixed reference point. And once they know where the North Star was, they could position their ships accordingly and be reasonably confident that they were going in the right direction.

Over time the North Star became a symbol for finding your way home safely and symbolically finding your way in life. But beyond that, as many sailors were deeply superstitious with a rich history of lore about life and death at sea, they were always looking for lucky charms. So many sailors began to place nautical star tattoos on their forearms or hands as a symbol of good luck and a desire to get home safely.

Skip forward through the centuries and the meaning of the nautical star tattoo has become broader. Not only is it a symbol of the sea, but also a sign of security and guidance for all sailors and travelers. It has also become a sign of following your dreams and achieving success in your life.

However, these is some disagreement concerning the design of the nautical star. Most people accept that the basic design of the nautical star is a five pointed star. But a minority of people claim that the nautical star represents the traditional design of a ship’s compass. This consists of the four cardinal directions, North, South, East, West, and possibly the intermediate directions of North East, South East, South West and North West. So their idea of the nautical star is a four pointed design or even an eight pointed star.

Personally, I think that the five pointed star best represents the design of the nautical star tattoo, especially when you consider that on many nautical maps, north is shown by a compass style five pointed star.

But whatever style of design is selected, one thing is clear; the nautical star has had a long connection with naval tradition and was originally a symbol of finding your way home safely. And while other groups may attempt to link themselves to the use of the nautical star tattoo, the sailors of bygone centuries will always retain the distinction of representing the original interpretation of this iconic tattoo design.

The history, meaning and symbolism of nautical star tattoos is
a hotly debated topic. Today many different groups have
adopted the Nautical star tattoo as a symbol for their own
movement and they have all ascribed their own meaning and
history to the symbol. Thus has lead to a wide
disagreement as the the meaning of the tattoo.Historically
most everyone agrees that Sailors were the first people to get
nautical star tattoos. In fact the very word nautical
relates back to sailing. So this connection has been
pretty firmly established. Most people would agree the
sailors were a pretty superstitious group historically and
sailor lore abounds with superstitious and fantastical stories
of life and death and being lost at sea. Early on
sailors navigated by the stars at night and the north star
became the symbol for finding ones way home. Once you
know where the north star is you can point your ship in the
right direction to get home. So the star became a symbol
for finding ones way home or more symbolically even finding
ones path in life. Therefore many sailors would tattoo
nautical stars on their forearms as a good luck symbol in
hopes of returning home.

However their modern day meaning is a more debated topic.
Many believe that groups including gay and lesbians, punk
rockers and those in the military have adopted the nautical
star tattoo as a very important symbol. The diversity of
these three groups has lead many to argue the meaning of their
tattoos.

For the military the connection is pretty obviously point
back to the early sailors and the symbolism and meaning is the
same as the early sailors. Many military people get a
nautical star tattoo as a symbol for finding ones path home
safely. Of course this can also include more
symbolically just finding ones way in life.

Here is a quote we found from a member of the armed
services and his interpretation of the tattoo:

“I am in the United States Army, an MP who searched towns
and villages for Al Quida and insurgents. I was in Iraq for 1
year. I have a red and black nautical star on my wrist. The
reason I got it was because when I was out there, I felt it
was a guide to guide me home to my family safely. I got it so
that it would remind me that I am going to make it to see my
son grow up. I am not gay, it doesn’t matter what you believe
it represents, it means something different for everyone. Out
in the desert, I would look up at the stars and think about
home. So anyone can think what they want to, that is what it
means to me. ”

Punk rockers have also adopted this as a popular symbol to
have tattooed. The punk movement traces its history and
use of the nautical star tattoo back to Sailor Jerry.
Sailor Jerry is historically one one of the most famous tattoo
artists ever. He was well known for his innovative and
“cool” designs. Punks have taken this symbol and it has
very much the same meaning of finding one way in life.
Being the rugged individualists type Punks are drawing to the
symbolism of true north and finding one own unique way in
life. So the Nautical star has become a symbol for this.
You see many punk bands that have full sleeve tattoos
typically incorporate nautical star tattoos either on their
elbows or elsewhere.

The lesbian and gay connection is the one that does not
seem so obvious at first. Historically back in the
1940’s and 50’s when alternative lifestyles were not the norm
and often women had to hide their alternative choices they
would sport a hidden nautical star. Often they would get
the star tattoo done on the inside of their wrist where it
could easily be hidden by a watch during the day but shown off
in the evening when out on the town. Today many lesbians
where the nautical star tattoo to show their connection with
their early pioneering sisters. Here is a little
evidence to support my points.

“Here’s the passage (with some pieces dropped) from “Boots
of Leather, Slippers of Gold: The History of a Lesbian
Community” by Elizabeth Lapovsky Kennedy and Madeilne D. Davis
copyright 1993 p. 189.

(talking about the 1940’s and 1950’s):

“…During this same time period, the cultural push to be
identified as lesbians- or at least different- all the time
was so powerful that it generated a new form of identification
among the tough bar lesbians: a star tattoo on the top of the
wrist, which was usually covered by a watch. This was the
first symbol of community identity that did not rely on
butch-fem imagery. We can trace this phenomenon back to an
evening of revelry in the late 1950’s, when a few butches
trooped over to “Dirty Dick’s” tattoo parlor on Chippewa
Street and had the tiny blue five-pointed star put on their
wrists. Later, some of the fems of this group also go the idea
one night and did it…The community views the tattoo as a
definite mark of identification…”the Buffalo police knew
[that] the people that had the stars on their wrist were
lesbians and they had their names and so forth. That it was an
identity thing with the gay community, with the lesbian
community”. The fact that the star tattoo was created by those
who were firmly into roles, in fact by the group that was
considered the butchy butches and their fems, suggest that the
force to assert lesbian identity was strong enough to break
through the existing traditions of boldness based in butch-fem
roles. The stars presage the methods of identity created by
gay liberation. In fact, the mark has become something of a
tradition in local circles and has seen a revival since the
1970s.”

This meaning of the symbol has of course created a lot of
problems and arguments among the other two groups of bearers
of nautical stars. Most puck and military people do not
want to have a nautical star that points back to anything from
the lesbian movement so many will say that there is no
connection there and this is false.

Here is a quote from another armed forces member about the
symbolism of the nautical star among the gay community:

“This “gay symbol” is a load of hooey that someone made up
VERY recently. The nautical star tattoo has been around nearly
as long as tattooing itself. The late Celts (or early Irish,
depending on your view of World History) were said to have
been the first to have the tattoos, although evidence of it
being used on ships in Spain has been found pre-dating the
Irish claim.

As a Marine, it’s a very commonplace symbol amongst us if
we have been part of a Boat Raid company, red for port, green
for starboard on varying parts of the body. On ship, I saw
about a million different variations on the Sailors I was was
serving with, obviously harking back to the sailor roots.”

Here is a quote from a punk rocker and his feelings about
the symbolism of the tattoo:

“what idiots..even the military boys dont know what it
really means….JUST SO YOU ALL KNOW!!!!!it was used by OLD
sailors.. and the symbol represents North on a Map …and it
is the North Star the sailors would use it as a baring to get
home….you can find it on Really really old maps and old navy
vessels… Punk Rock.. well we use it because we can and
because Sailor Jerry made the coolest tattoos who started
putting them on everyone.. my grandfather even had one thus
being used as a traditional icon”

It just goes to show that when the same powerful symbol is
used over and over again over decades of time it can taken on
very different meanings for different groups. So all of
those that you see sporting a nautical star tattoo might not
all have the same interpretation of its symbolism.

So do you have a nautical star tattoo or think about
getting one in the future? Which meaning of the symbol
will you get the nautical star for? As long as you know
what the symbolism behind the star is for and you have gotten
it for the right reason to either support the lesbian movement
or as a symbol to finding your way!

The reason for the growing popularity is due in part by the sheer beauty of the star itself. It always looks elegant on the body and will definitely be an eye opener to the public. Aside from the actual appearance, it also holds a deeper meaning.

Shooting stars represents an unforgettable and memorable life changing event. Such events can be as simple as your 18th birthday or graduating high school. Special events will always be remembered in your mind similar to watching a bunch of shooting stars soar through the pitch dark sky.

2. Nautical Star

Before compasses were invented, sailors used stars to guide their journey throughout the night, particularly the North Star. It was understood that following the bright North Star will eventually lead you home. Therefore, the nautical star has earned the symbolization of protection and guidance. Now it is common to see a soldier or fishermen sporting a nifty nautical star on their body to represent the faith of returning home safely.

3. The Star of David

This six-pointed star is a religious symbol with each point resembling a day of the week while the center representing Sabbath. The Star of David also represents harmony and unity. This particular star is a simple design created by two triangles overlapping one another.

4. Pentagram

The pentagram has two very distinct meaning determined by the positioning of the star itself. A pentagram is a five-pointed star which means one point always stands alone. If this lone point faces downward, then the pentagram represents the Devil since the opposite ends have two points appearing like horns.

On the other hand, if the pentagram points upwards, then the meaning shifts from the Devil to balance and protection. Each point on the pentagram will then represents the four major elements of earth; wind, water, fire and earth. The final top point symbolizes spirit.

5. Septagram

A septagram is a unique seven-pointed star. Since there are seven points on this particular star, a septagram is a symbol of luck. The number seven is universally considered to be a lucky number as seen everywhere including popular media such as films and songs. Additionally, a septagram is also a symbol of magic.

Shooting star tattoos are currently one of the most sought after tattoo designs. Their popularity continues to rise because they are attractive and eye catching. The symbolic value of shooting star tattoos is connected to the belief that these types of stars make wishes come true. It is believed that if anyone wishes on a shooting star, his or her wish will be fulfilled. People who choose to ink themselves with shooting star tattoos and designs symbolically carry with them the hope that anything they desire will be availed to them. Typical designs incorporate both large and small stars that reduce in size as the stars reach the bottom of the design. This imagery is often very attractive and nice to look at. The result is a magical tattoo of many stars that are sprinkled all over a particular area of the body or skin. As the stars continue to decrease in size, they appear to be little trinkets that manage to cover a substantial area without being too overwhelming. This symbol of good luck is both appealing and meaningful. Some men may shy away from shooting star tattoos and designs but the reality is that this particular type of tattoo is appropriate for both men and women.

These types of tattoos symbolize good luck, success, and wishes for good things in life. they also represent the concept of grabbing opportunities when they arise. The fleeting moment of a shooting star means that the precious moment should not be allowed to slip away. Shooting stars are also commonly referred to as falling stars. Falling star tattoos have become more common and they are highly recommended for people who want to make a statement without being too over the top. They are an opportunity for people to express how they feel and give other people an idea of whom they are and what they feel about life. This is why it always important to choose tattoo designs that one will be comfortable with for a long time. Shooting star tattoos and designs are amazing art forms and a skilled artist can bring out the wonder of these stars on a person’s skin. A tattoo is an investment in body art that can either be for public viewing or personal pleasure and reflection.

There are many types of shooting star tattoo designs and these are based on personal tastes and preferences that determine what the tattoo will eventually look like. With imagination and creativity, shooting star designs can be incorporated into other shapes for people who want to steer away from more conventional tattoo designs. The popular design constitutes the image of stars of different sizes spreading across the design to provide the feeling of stars shooting away. Ideally, this should be the standard image but to make it more unique, other images can surround the design. These images include flame tattoo deigns and pictures of the moon that can beautifully frame the stars. The aesthetic composition of shooting star tattoos is a key reason why more and more people are choosing to ink this particular design on different parts of their bodies. The design has a cultural or spiritual significance to some people but for others, the undeniable beauty of the tattoo is enough to convince them to try it out. Famous celebrities have not been left out of the trend and there is a high demand for shooting star tattoos in the entertainment industry. This also inspires many young people and young people at heart to choose the design.

The typical presentation of shooting star tattoo designs is a large star that provides the point of focus. Numerous small stars that continue to decrease in size as they gradually move away from the large star in a trail surround this large star. The design is usually done in black ink but the use of bright, varied colors is also recommended. Women especially like to use bright colors on their star tattoos. They also add more magic to the design by placing other images aside from the small stars. Standard designs provide a basis or backdrop for what the tattoo can look like but a tattoo artist can add something extra to make the tattoo completely unique. A key advantage of shooting star tattoos is that they are simple and easy for skilled artists to create. Creativity is essential during the process and it is important for the artist to have a clear understanding of the type of tattoo that a person wants. To gather ideas regarding the best styles for shooting tattoos and designs, it is a good idea to go through an online gallery of designs that can serve as a guide. This will ensure that there will be no disappointment or regret after the tattoo is completed.

The popular or preferred parts of the body where shooting star tattoos are commonly placed are the stomach, ankle, nape of the neck, shoulder, and arm. Many people are placing the tattoo on their abdomen but this more of a personal choice than a fad. The tattoo can actually be placed anywhere, depending on a particular individual’s style and affinity for pain. This is because certain parts of the body are more painful to tattoo than others. The placement of the tattoo design also depends on how visible a person would like the tattoo to be. If the tattoo is supposed to be seen regularly, the neck is a good option. The back would be a discrete option for people who rarely or v=never expose their backs. A single star is ideal for the ankle or shoulder. A group of stars looks good when placed on the shoulder or along the abdomen area as a delicate trail of stars. Stars with bright flames are very striking and aesthetically pleasing. The brighter the flame the better. Comets also work well with shooting star tattoos and designs. The stars can be black, colorful or simply outlines. These celestial bodies have long been popularly depicted in art. With tattoos being the next frontier of the art world for many people, there is no wonder that this is a favored type of tattoo today. Whatever meaning or whether there is a meaning or not to a person’s shooting star tattoo, it is sure to be attractive and not something likely to be regretted later.

Tattoos are what you want them to be. A tattoo might just be an internal expression desperate to take form but then you must, at any rate, know what you want to exhibit so desperately. There is no dearth of quality artists and there is no shortage of smart designs either.

In fact, a new age has dawned on tattoo craftsmanship and today some of the designs are nothing short of unimaginable (sometimes, even the most established artists are awed by their final products). What goes generically for tattoos sounds as true for its niche- tribal tattoos? If you get them right, there is no beating the concept. This brings us to a crux- how to find the right kind of tribal tattoo.

You Must First Know What They Are
To understand how to make the right choice, it is important to understand what they are. In short, tribal tattoos are any kind of tattoo designs which reflect on the ancestral lineage of a race. The Magyars may endorse to a whole lot of ritual beliefs and war-torn imagery in their tattooing while the Incans may present a sense of mystique and religious fiber in their tribal tattoos.

The tattoos may hold a certain symbol dear or talk about abstractions. To bring about the best in such tattoos, a unique placement of arches, threading and balance of “black” and “other colors” is required. If you get them all perfectly, you will make more than sought impact with the tribal tattoos.

Look For Cues Into The Past
While choosing a tribal tattoo you must ensure that the design that you seek is some kind of a derivative or fallout of an original symbol used in remote past. It will be wise checking into a local library for reference or taking cue from some learned person. Tribal tattoos would not create an earnest impression unless they denote the living style of a race. It can highlight rebellion or worshiping or love or various fibers of faith but it has got to denote some aspect of existence, followed centuries earlier.

Learn About The Meanings
Almost all the tattoos have a particular meaning attached to them. Thus, it is important to understand what a symbol or an image or even a vague impression might mean. Such an impression can be altered into a clearer image but at the base it must suit your personality. Just think if a die-hard romantic mistakenly gets a warlord tattoo designed on his body, would it not be equivalent to cheating on his truest impulses.

To Conclude
Internet can be a superb idea to fetch yourself the perfect tribal tattoo. To really help matters, its repertoire is vast. This allows it to provide more than a dozen tattoos for every kind of search. In addition, because you can learn about them through many academic articles online, you will not find it difficult to get yourself the best deals. Just as it is important to find the right tribal tattoo, it is important to find out if the parlor you are seeking complies with the protocols of studio hygiene and offers the very best of machines to you.

The symbolism of a tribal tattoo is emblematic, exhibiting the essence of the spirit of each society, and its culture. The various designs honor gods, spirits, Nature, rebirth, regeneration, life’s cycles, seasons, etc. They originated in earlier civilizations, reflecting their culture. It is believed that tattoos began with man mutilating his skin leaving an everlasting scar. The application was either by using a sharp object cutting the skin or perhaps by burning their skin. Over time the process has evolved to become more refined turning into a form of art.

Primitive societies were close to the earth, and it is understood that first tribal patterns honored the sun and fire in worship of their gods. It is quite likely that those wearing such tattoos believed they were eminent so were accepted as being closer to their gods.

Traditional ceremonies giving rise to tribal tattoo pictures are founded on three key issues: pain, blood and permanence. Through time tattooing became more developed allowing patterns to become more intricate changing into an accepted form of art. In its present form, past native and aboriginal designs are mixed with current artistic translations and modern graphic styles.

The first tribal tattoo pictures supported a unity for tribe members, a status within society and even kith and kin. It was widespread community practice as a confirmation ceremony or induction into the tribe. The belief has even extended into people rejoining in eternity. As Earth has become a global village, many ‘tribal’ unique qualities have disappeared. Non-the-less, there are new emerging ‘tribal groups’ today which exhibit a common theme in the design of their body art, whether neighborhood gangs, bikers, or comparable groups. Current tattoos are basically the same by offering a stamp of admission to, and a permanence of, being a member of the gang.

Presently, traditional tribal tattoo pictures are connected to three groups or regions, Maori tattoo, Hawaiian tattoo, and Polynesian tattoo.

A Maori tribal tattoo is considered holy and the tattooing application is in general extremely sore and tedious. Skin is carved instead of injecting needles, as is the custom nowadays. Alternatively, special chisels are applied in the operation in making patterns. Maori tattoos are made up of characteristic spirals and curves illustrating significant moments in the individual’s life. It is a mark of commemorating and noting important occasions, or showing a person’s courage and strength.

An indigenous Hawaiian tattoo is a branding of one’s personal identity. Yet, it is different because the body art application makes use of a tool made from a large tooth from a hippopotamus which is called a ‘moli’. Also, the significance of this tattoo is unique, because it represents mourning while offering a feeling of protection. It is significantly more than a regular body decoration.

Polynesian tribal tattoos interpret Polynesian traditions, religious and secular values, individual tribes’ ceremonies and their forebears.

The identifying feature of tribal tattoo pictures is a solid black design. Modern tattoo artists are disregarding this with artistic license by instituting color in an attempt to make them more engaging and, by inference, improving the value of tribal tattoo pictures.
